[00:00.00]Gabriela Mistral was once an ordinary teacher in a
[00:04.85] small village school in Northern Chile. Towering
[00:08.18]mountains separate her village from the world outside.
[00:11.56] Gabriela Mistral was only 15 when she began teaching,
[00:16.44] but she was a good teacher. She helped the minds of
[00:19.97] her students' scale the mountain walls and reached
[00:23.10] out to the world beyond. For 18 years, Gabriela
[00:26.07] devoted her life to the poor farm children of
[00:30.69]Chile's Northern valleys. During part of this time
[00:33.97], she was director of schools in all of Chile.
[00:36.94]Before long, many countries recognized her as a great
[00:41.52] friend of children and the leader in education.
[00:44.13]In 1922, she was invited to Mexico to help organize the
[00:49.78]rural school system. Two years later, Gabriela Mistral
[00:54.00]came to the United States where she served as a
[00:57.98] visiting professor in several colleges.
