[00:17.46]Self-Acceptance Leads to Happiness
[00:21.89]Finding acceptance is a natural desire of most people.
[00:26.8]When we are young,
[00:28.23]it is important to us to be accepted
[00:30.71]by a group and to be seen as "cool" by our peers.
[00:35.28]To do this,
[00:36.67]we will often adopt the views and interests
[00:40.48]of the group rather than develop our own.
[00:43.26]Over time, however,
[00:44.68]we have the opportunity to
[00:47.31]learn to accept ourselves.
[00:50.04]People who have done this are confident
[00:52.71]in their true abilities;
[00:54.67]they do not feel the need to create
[00:56.67]a facade to impress other people.
[00:59.77]They are concerned with
[01:01.33]whether their actions produce worthwhile results
[01:05.11]rather than with how they are seen by others.
[01:09.06]Less secure people are quite different.
[01:12.71]Instead of finding security in themselves,
[01:16.020004]they look for other people to provide it.
[01:18.65]This kind of person constantly agrees
[01:22.01]with everything others suggest,
[01:24.88]for fear of having their own ideas rejected.
[01:28.729996]Arrogant or defensive people
[01:30.67]are also usually insecure;
[01:33.75]in an attempt to hide their insecurities,
[01:36.53]they belittle or blame others.
[01:39.66]Secure people do not give up
[01:41.93]when faced with a difficult situation;
[01:44.880005]they say "I can" rather than "I can't."
[01:49.82]Knowing that each day is an opportunity to
[01:52.6]use their talents to acquire good health,
[01:55.83]good friendships, and great happiness,
[01:58.630005]they always put their best foot forward.
[02:01.99]Contented people do not judge others,
[02:05.17]nor do they judge themselves.
[02:07.78]They can appreciate the differences
[02:09.98]between themselves and other people.
[02:13.71]Recognizing the details
[02:15.69]that we cannot change about ourselves
[02:18.55]is also a sign of personal growth.
[02:21.75]We cannot change our height,
[02:24.17]so why waste energy complaining about being short?
[02:28.01]Our energy would be better spent
[02:30.83]on more constructive projects.
[02:33.59]Instead of dwelling on personal characteristics
[02:36.68]we are not satisfied with,
[02:38.77]we ought to focus more on what we are good at.
[02:42.97]Such expressions as "Love thyself"
[02:46.62]and "to thine own self be true"
[02:49.81]are about self-acceptance and confidence,
[02:53.01]as well as honesty and morality.
[02:56.65]We should consider them to be good advice,
[02:59.59]and treat them as signposts showing
[03:02.03]the way to happiness within.
