[00:01.00]Because of the expensive parachute training
[00:03.36]and equipment required to deliver smoke jumpers safely to a fire's edge,
[00:08.11]only about 450 men and women of each summer's firefighting workers are hired as smoke jumpers.
[00:16.05]Todd Onken is a 50-year-old retired smoke jumper.
[00:20.59]He knew what it's likely to be out there in a wild part of the forest mountains working
[00:26.48]all night putting out fires because until just last summer,
[00:30.90]he was a smoke jumper for 23 years. Now he is no longer a smoke jumper.
[00:37.27]He missed working with his friends, men and women who are strong and physically fit,
[00:42.68]and not afraid of hard work or a parachute jump into the mountains.
[00:47.34]He missed the airplane rides and parachute jumps into some of the most beautiful mountains and forests on Earth.
[00:54.64]But he doesn't miss as much those long, smoky night shifts putting out fire.
